A BLE system can consist of one or more beacons, which are wireless devices that transmit a packet of information via the Bluetooth Low Energy protocol. This information can be received either by a nearby smartphone or a gateway and used to calculate the position relative to the beacon. In the simplest version, a BLE beacon periodically transmits its unique identification code, while more complex models integrate various types of sensors: temperature, humidity, pressure, microphone, or accelerometer.
